Every year, WITec sends a special Christmas card to its customers. It shows varying applications of WITec imaging systems with a festive touch. In recent years Santa Claus, Christmas cookies and fir branches have been analyzed for the card.
This year’s WITec Christmas card shows oddly shaped stars in blue and yellow. The customers’ feedback was very positive and people asked for more information about the cards’ subject. We appreciate the interest and are happy to tell you more:
The stars were acquired with the new Raman Imaging and Scanning Electron Microscope RISE. With RISE Microscopy it is possible for the first time to acquire SEM and Raman images with the same microscope. The image on the Christmas card shows an SEM image overlaid with a Raman image. The structures shown are molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) layers on a silicon surface that form star-like shapes. The SEM was used to image the nano-structures of the formations. The Raman image reveals the chemical and molecular characteristics. By overlaying the images, the results of SEM and Raman measurement can be correlated.
We wish you a very happy Holiday Season, Merry Christmas, and all the best in 2015!
